Town 141 of 355: Arthur, ND
Population: 328
County: Cass
Original Visit: 5/13/24
-
First called Rosedale (for the sister of an early settler, Rose Gunkel) before the extension of the Northern Pacific Railroad through the area, Arthur was platted in May 1882 by Samuel B. Johnson and named in honor of President Chester A. Arthur, the 21st President of the United States. The town’s first building was the general store of S. W. Hall, and next was John Brandenburg’s lumberyard to assist in constructing other structures. Next came a hotel, a confectionery, the depot, and another store. Dave Comb built the schoolhouse, and other businesses began to spring up as the population grew. The Arthur Good Samaritan History House began in March 1923, when residents began working together to care for the community's needs. The town was incorporated two years prior. The present governor of North Dakota and a 2024 presidential candidate, Doug Burgum, was born and raised in this small town of 328 people.

These photos of Arthur were taken on May 13, 2024. Towns are dynamic entities and are always changing, so please note that things may look different today. Not every business, point of interest, etc. in every town will be pictured. Please enjoy the photos and share your own pictures, thoughts, memories & anecdotes in the comments!
